Life Saviour

Thank you doctor for the ray of hope.
I met Dr Sharmishtha Patra during my second Pregnancy. During my first Pregnancy I was not at Kolkata. In my first Pregnancy I started spotting when I was one and a half month Pregnant. I was hospitalized for 5 days and given loads of injections and advised bed rest. But after 3 days of discharge, there was profuse bleeding and I miscarried. I was shattered. I am also hypothyroid, on Eltroxin for the last 4 years. So my suspicion was whether my Miscarriage was due to hypothyroidism. My husband and I had extensive discussions with doctors and did extensive reading ourselves. When hypothyroidism is well controlled, which is judged by Free T4 levels, it does not have any adverse effects on Pregnancy. We came to know that if Free T4 level is within normal range there is no need to change the dose of Eltroxin. Eltroxin dose adjustment in Pregnancy is never done empirically, as even higher dose of Eltroxin than necessary, is harmful for the growing baby. We also came to know that most of the Miscarriages happen because the Pregnancy is not healthy. If Pregnancy is healthy then it can withstand minor bleedings even without any supportive medicines. However if the Pregnancy is not healthy, then they get aborted whatsoever treatment is given, as there is no definite treatment for bleeding in early Pregnancy and there is no scientific evidence to suggest that any form of treatment can actually prevent miscarriage. If the Pregnancy has some inherent defects, the only thing the medicines do is to postpone the Miscarriage and nothing else, which happened in my first Pregnancy. The Pregnancies which survive such early bleeding are erroneously thought to have survived due to medicines, injections etc. But actually they survived because they were healthy enough to survive due to their genetic make up.
Dr Sharmishtha Patra took care of me with lot of sincerity and dedication. I became the proud mother of a son 5 months back. I have my heart felt gratitude towards Dr Sharmishtha Patra. She is a very dedicated and most importantly an ethical doctor. She does not do any unnecessary investigations or treatment. She has a good command over her subject as she used to answer to all our queries patiently. She is always approachable. I strongly recommend her to anyone seeking Gynecological treatment. May GOD bless her.

I lost my child

I got in touch with her on recommendation of another doctor whom I believe a lot, so I completely had blind faith on her. she is polite, well spoken , have good personality, liked her instantly. I got pregnant without any treatment...I had few problems hypo thyroidism, obesity..I knew from before that the dosage for thyroid medicine needs to be increased as soon as you conceive, so i explicitly highlighted the point whether my med dose is ok or should i once consult my endocrinologist..and she said she has seen things are in control so no need. I was 2 months pregnant. within few days of detection of conception i started spotting with mild abdominal cramps, I visited her immediately within an hour, although initially she said over phone that i need an immediate USG, but on reaching Apollo she didn't do that, she gave me susten 200 mg once daily. For the entire week I had mucus and blood sometimes clots too.I called her up after few days saying it is still going on and didn't yet stop, she said its normal and will take time to subside. This Wednesday(3rd aug 2011)at 11 pm i started bleeding profusely and there was excessive abdominal pain, I called her up she said to come to her the following morning. The entire night passed in tremendous abdominal pain and mental agony. In the morning I was asked an usg and radiologist said there is no trace of pregnancy left. I reported this to her and now am quoting what exactly she said " it might be disheartening to know that you have completely miscarried", on asking then what was it since last week, she said " it was a threat to miscarry, which u completely miscarried last night"..
I consulted another much experienced gynecologist, he pointed few things..
1. Thyroid medicine Eltroxin needed to be increased from 50 mg to 100 mg immediately u conceived
2. when there was spotting, there was need for admission to hospital and to keep on full bed rest and using injections..infact when i asked her after spotting that what rest should i take, she never explicitly said anything, she said take rest , do light work no problem..she never ever defined how exactly i should stay
3. when i started bleeding profusely with pain, how she could allow me to bleed the whole night like that and not admit me or atleast check the bleeding herself
4. yesterday my dad called her up to talk to her, out of many conversations, few most shocking were:
a. "she said a tree gives lots of fruits, few wither away during summer, it really doesnt matter"
b. "seniour doctors never upgrade themselves, and that mode of treatment has changed these days"..on asking why didnt u check bleeding urself, she asked"how will i check that"...on saying u can use cotton ..she said "these days we dont touch patient coz that affects patient's health"
c. "I am a very responsible doctor and i will go on with my mode of treatment"
d. she remained silent about my thyroid issue..no comments at all..i wonder if she remembered i had thyroid
e. she said she did usg 1 week back and radiologist said everything is ok, when my dad said u didnt do it, she said ohh sry then may be it was not required..i was literally shocked to hear this..she doesnt even remember what she is doing with her patients
f. after hearing all she said i will take her responsibilty dont wry, and when my dad said will u be able to account for ur negligence and give back that child to us? she had no answer...the list is endless
I am a mother who lost her child. We are shattered, doesnt matter if our baby was 2 months or more or less, it was a life..I am just 24 yrs old and its our first issue, we had nothing to say if we had any problems, or that miscarriage was inevitable..but this was sheer negligence and she can't avoid it. Who will account for our loss? Can she ever repay back what we lost ? We request her just one thing, please don't kill lives , its unethical...My doctor said this situation could have been avoided, or atleast tried for..but she just watched my baby perish away in my womb and gave a consolation speech..life isn't a drama , I wish no parent passes through what we are passing today ...Please be careful all before blindly believing ...
